INTO THE LIGHT
marks Collister's astonishing 20 year career as one of the UK's
most critically acclaimed singers and recording artists. A supremely powerful,
yet subtle performer, she continues to explore a soundscape which gravitates
somewhere between folk, soul, pop and jazz and yet is also entirely unique and
of her own making. Her latest release is an uplifting record with all the
freshness and spirit of someone at the very start of their career and yet it
bares all the hallmarks of the mature and abiding talent who delivers it.
Following hot on the heels of the well received 'An Equal Love' (Topic/2001)
INTO THE LIGHT contains 12 tracks where Christine's delivery, always
distinctive and strong, are equalled by her obvious strengths as a songwriter
of sophistication and worth. Christine Collister grew up on the Isle of Man and
enjoyed a childhood in rugged and free landscape. Born with an adventurous
nature, at an early age, she also began to explore her sense of spirituality,
characteristics which inform the content of her latest songs. As a child,
Christine sang in the church choir and later on began to make appearances at
her local folk club.
Christine's professional recording career began on the mainland in the mid
1980s. She first came to national attention singing the theme tune to the cult
hit BBC TV series, 'The Life and Loves of A She Devil'. Following a fruitful
association with The Richard Thompson Band, Christine also featured on albums
by Loudon Wainwright and Bert Jansch and enjoyed a period of acclaim in a seven
year partnership with Clive Gregson. Christine's subsequent endeavours have
enabled her to develop new and liberating musical partnerships, including those
with Barb Jungr and with female folk super group, Daphne's Flight.
However, it was probably her solo albums, 'The Dark Gift of Time' and 'Blue
Aconite' which began to establish Christine as an artist of stature and
substance, both at home and abroad during the past 18 months, Christine's
career has once again evolved and after two successful solo tours and a
performance at The Royal Albert Hall, she has also been very warmly received by
audiences of diverse artists including legendary country performer, Don
Williams and blues guitar maestro Eric Bibb.
Her voice was featured in the poignant and moving BBC Radio 4 play, 'FAMOUS',
and she is currently helping to develop this play into a theatre and TV
production. In addition, she has appeared as a presenter on Mike Harding's BBC
Radio 2 Folk Show and has interviewed stars of The Royal Festival Hall
songwriter season, The Song's The Thing, for future radio production. This is a
series which she herself will take part in later this year, as part of a
tribute to the late, great Kirsty MacColl. INTO THE LIGHT was recorded in
amongst all this activity (along with jumping out of an aeroplane and swimming
with dolphins...) and reaps the benefits from working in 3 different locations
with 3 different producers; Steve Lima, Misha Nikolic and Dave Armstrong. INTO
THE LIGHT presents an inspired and inspiring musical journey from an important
artist, work which is both emotive, vibrant and arresting.
Christine's new album INTO THE LIGHT was released by Topic Records on 30th
September 2002.
