W.C. Handy Nomination for Watermelon Slim
16th December 2004
Watermelon Slim who was a last minute addition to the 2004 Festival on the Isle
of Man having squeezed us in as the last gig of his European Tour was that
weekend, by acclamation, the oustanding star after his scintillating
performance with the very excellent and unselfish Guy Davis. Slim
later described his show on the Isle of Man as the "gig of his lifetime" which
was very flattering and gratifying for us.
So for Slim's growing army of fans the news today that he has now been
nominated for the ultra prestigious gong, a WC Handy Award as "best newcomer",
is marvellous.
Watermelon Slim has dedicated his life to the Blues and, at last, his
perseverence and self-belief looks as though it will be rewarded as he receives
what must be the second best Christmas present of a lifetime for a bluesman, a
W.C. Handy nomination. The reward itself must surely follow if the judgement of
the 2004 Isle of Man Blues Festival fans is any sort of guide at all.
Multi-linguist, Shakespeare scholar, MENSA member, Vietnam veteran and peace
activist Watermelon Slim has been on the blues circuit for many, many years and
now into his 6th decade he looks to be on the verge of the wider recognition
that he so richly deserves albeit as a "newcomer"!
