Back Door Slam Wow Packed Arts Centre
5th May 2005
Wednesday night 4th May 2004 Centenary Hall Arts Centre, Peel. Back Door Slam
in their first sit-down, ticketed concert sold-out the Centenary Hall last
night and rocked the place upside down with their seamless blend of blues
standards and original material.
Davey Knowles
|
Davy Knowles is something of a Johnny Laing doppelganger both in his
precocious guitar skills and mature, way beyond his years, singing voice and he
led the band through almost two hours of adrenalin pumping, foot stomping,
"just like the old days" blues rock.
The rhythm section, Jamie Armstrong on
bass and Ross Doyle on drums, provide the heartbeat of this band and allow
Davy to stretch out on his blistering leads knowing they will follow him.
Hardly breaking into a sweat and always in total control Davy rang the kneck
of his borrowed PRS guitar and by turns extracted some rather pretty,
beautiful, sweet notes from it
particularly on their original material which, for me, was the highlight of the
night.
Original tunes are the test of a band and when they are as good as these, Back
Door Slam, as songwriters, pass the toughest musical test of all with top colours.
Davy also entertained and impressed us with his Mandolin and Acoustic Jumbo
and showed that the fireworks he can produce with his fretting hand are more
than matched by the rhythm skills of his picking hand. The combination of the
two is awe inspiring.
How good is it that they will be on the Festival Main Stage in just 10 days
time? Bloody good.
